Two years ago, I travelled to Jamaica with something a little different in my suitcase – clothes, toys, and school supplies for the children at a local village home. That first visit inspired my earlier blog, “Natalie Packs for a Purpose in Jamaica”, and began what has become a very special annual tradition.
Last year, when I couldn’t make the trip in person, I still wanted to stay connected. So instead, I packed and shipped a large barrel of clothing, books, and toiletries to ensure the children received something from “Miss Bowers” – as they call me.
This year, at exactly the same time, I returned to the island and back to the village. With my ever-patient driver, Jason, I was able to spend time with the children once again. Walking through those gates and being greeted by a sea of smiling faces was every bit as moving as the first time. Without fail, my visit to see them is the highlight of my trip to Jamaica.
The girls loved the clothes I brought and have already started planning my next visit. Apparently, I now look like “Barbie,” and they’ve given me a shopping list for next time: lip gloss, body lotion, and cologne!
Hewitt, the Village Manager, and his team continue to do remarkable work, providing a safe, supportive, and loving home for the children and young people in their care. Their dedication is truly inspiring.
After my visit, Hewitt kindly wrote:
“The best part of your trip is how happy the children are to see you. After you left, they kept talking about Barbie coming to see them. They are eagerly looking forward to your next visit.”
The feeling is mutual.
I’m already planning my next trip – and, as ever, I’ll be packing for a purpose.
